Today opens the plenary session of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe, the organization that defends human rights, democracy and the rule of law in 47 countries .... different institutions and not to be confused with the European Union - even if those of us that the Council of Europe and contributed not a little (probably unintentionally) to make the possibility of confusion "donating" their symbol and the EU anthem ... ...... but that's another story ......
Returning to the title ..... Why you should hear about the Council of Europe this week? Not only because the Minister Frattini will speak before the Assembly - will be interesting to see what the questions will be asked during the question time ....... not only because Piero Fassino (Member of the Italian delegation) will present his report on the Middle East ...... but above
1) because tomorrow should be elected the new Italian judge at the European Court of Human Rights ...... the Court that "protects" 800 million Europeans from abuse and harassment of its Member .......
2) because the Assembly will discuss topics such as press freedom violations occurring in the 47 member states (Italy in the report is quoted several times), the role that pharmaceutical companies have had in the decision of the World Health Organization to declare that avian and swine had reached the level of disease (some MPs will try not to put on the agenda for debate in this House to be held Thursday .... but a hearing was held in open court Tuesday to be attended by a delegation from WHO is that pharmaceutical representatives. Other topics on the table ..... that the rights of LGBT ..... including those to receive recognition of their legal couple ..... The report also calls on religious leaders to refrain from comments like "homosexuality is a sin and must be ordered" ..... this step more than a little concerned about the people involved because of the direct consequences there would be no longer able to "choose" for instance, teachers in a Catholic school on the basis of their sexual orientation also ........
